When is the best time to film in Santorini? Sunrise is wonderful for quieter streets and freedom to move between locations. Evening brings beautiful light across the caldera. Daytime gives you those bright whites and bold blues that many couples imagine when they think of the island.
The right choice depends on the images you want, the season, your location and how comfortable you feel in the heat. At Santorini.video, we consider all of these before suggesting a meeting time.
Beautiful evening light, a clear view of the setting sun and a comfortable filming location are three different things. Understanding that distinction makes planning your shoot much easier.
Sunrise: Our Favourite Time for Space and Freedom
There is something special about exploring Santorini before the day becomes busy. Sunrise gives us more room to move, more choice of angles and more opportunities to film you within the landscape without a constant flow of people behind you.
Early mornings have become more popular as travellers share their experiences online. We no longer expect to have every viewpoint to ourselves. Even so, in our experience, the choice of workable filming spots remains far greater than later in the day, particularly in Oia.
Some sequences would be extremely difficult to create in those same locations at any other time. For video, that freedom matters: we need space for movement and a background that works throughout the shot.
What Time Do We Meet?
For our sunrise sessions, we generally meet at the published sunrise time for Santorini on your date. The sun does not become visible from every street or terrace at that exact moment because the terrain and buildings affect when the first direct light reaches us.
On our usual Oia route, we meet, walk to the first location and begin around the blue domes while the sun starts to appear beyond the higher ground. We plan the sequence around how the light reaches the places we will be using.
Where We Like to Film at Sunrise
- Oia: one of our strongest recommendations for a sunrise session, with a wide choice of views and much more freedom than during the busiest hours.
- Kamari: a good choice for an early morning seaside setting.
- Pyrgos: beautiful on the sunrise-facing side, with views that work particularly well in the early light.
- Vlychada Beach: another option we can consider, depending on the season and the look you want.
- Imerovigli: certain spots work, but we do not usually recommend it as our first choice for a complete sunrise route because the options for continuing the session are more limited.
What to Prepare for an Early Start
Hair and makeup need to be ready before the meeting time. If you are staying outside Oia, arrange transport in advance: an early taxi can add a significant cost, and you do not want to spend the morning trying to find one. A prearranged transfer or rental car may suit your plans better.
The reward is a full day still ahead of you. By breakfast, you have already explored the island, shared an experience and filmed in locations that become much harder to use later.
Why Any Early Morning Hour Will Not Do
Sunrise and the hours immediately afterwards do not offer the same conditions. Santorini’s slopes, buildings and narrow streets create changing patches of sun and shade. A requested viewpoint may have an awkward division of light across the couple or the background.
As a practical starting point for our daytime sessions, we often look at around three hours after sunrise. By then, we usually have more predictable direct light across many of the locations couples request.
This is our planning guideline, rather than a fixed rule for every spot. Filming earlier in that interval requires a carefully chosen route and a clear understanding of where the light will fall. We always check the date and location before confirming the time.
Daytime: Bright Whites, Blue Domes and Strong Contrast
If you love the bright, vivid look of Santorini, a daytime shoot can be a beautiful choice. Strong sunlight gives the white architecture and blue details a very different character from the softer colours of sunrise or evening.
The white walls also reflect light, which can help us work with the strong sun. However, that reflected brightness can be uncomfortable for your eyes. Heat and squinting are often more challenging for the couple than the lighting is for the camera.
We recommend daytime filming when you feel comfortable in those conditions and specifically enjoy this look. Oia and Imerovigli are strong options, and Megalochori is also worth considering.
Our Preferred Months for Daytime Sessions
For comfort, we particularly like April, early May, late September and October, depending on the weather that day. Daytime is also an option we consider throughout winter.
During the quieter months, cloud cover may mean there is little direct sunrise or sunset light to work with. In those conditions, a daytime session can make more sense than arranging everything around a brief golden moment that may not appear.
Evening: Start Before the Sunset
For a couple’s walk that includes sunset, we normally recommend starting around one and a half to two hours before the sun goes down. Ninety minutes can work very well for a thoughtfully planned route.
This gives us time to move between locations, capture different scenes and reach the final spot without rushing. For some routes, attractive evening light begins earlier, around three and a half hours before sunset. That is a wider window of possibilities, rather than a recommendation that every session needs to last that long.
Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Megalochori and selected locations around Akrotiri can all give us beautiful evening footage. The best route depends on the date and the kind of setting you prefer.
Where Should We Film the Actual Sunset?
A place can look wonderful in evening light without giving us a clear view of the sun disappearing over the horizon. The sunset direction changes through the year, and nearby land or buildings can hide it from a particular position.
We check the sun’s position for your date using planning maps. A photograph taken at a location in one month does not guarantee the same sunset background in another.
Oia: Choose the Location Carefully
For our filming sessions, we generally avoid the castle area at sunset during the busy months, particularly from May through September. The number of people makes it difficult to create the space and uninterrupted movement we need.
Instead, we look at suitable spots towards Finikia, depending on the season and route. During the quieter months, the castle area may become more workable, but we still assess the conditions rather than assume it will be empty.
Skaros: Spectacular, with Time Needed for the Walk
Skaros is one of our favourite dramatic settings for sunset footage. The landscape gives a very different feeling from the village streets and terraces.
It also takes time and effort to reach. We need to allow for the walk, your footwear, your outfit and the return journey. If you love this location, tell us before we plan the session so we can give it enough time.
Megalochori, Akrotiri and the Beaches
Megalochori village is lovely for an evening session, but we would not choose its streets specifically to film the sun meeting the horizon.
At the locations we use around Akrotiri, we particularly enjoy the light about an hour and a half before sunset. We do not automatically choose those same positions for the final sunset shot: that requires checking the exact viewpoint and season.
The same applies to beaches, including Vlychada. Beautiful coastal scenery does not guarantee that the setting sun will be visible in the direction we want to film. We choose the spot for your date.
Do Not Overlook the Half Hour After Sunset
We can keep filming after the sun disappears, and the results can be beautiful. The atmosphere changes, the village lights begin to stand out and the footage takes on a quieter evening mood.
In Imerovigli, we particularly enjoy working with the lights in the background. With our camera equipment and a video light where needed, we can create a different kind of portrait from the bright daytime scenes.
If your schedule runs a little later, do not assume the opportunity is lost. We can plan to use that half hour after sunset intentionally. It is worth considering if you like a more atmospheric evening look.
What If It Is Cloudy or Windy?
We look at the actual conditions and discuss the options with you. When possible, we may move a session to later in the day or another available date.
If moving the session is not possible, we work with the conditions and choose the most suitable locations. When the weather creates serious discomfort or prevents the result we have discussed, we review the booking individually. In some weather-related situations, we have agreed to cancel and return the deposit; this is assessed case by case.
We plan around the light we hope to have while staying realistic about the weather on the day.
A Note About Sunrise and Drone Footage
The quieter conditions at sunrise can open up more possibilities for drone compositions without crowds in the frame. A location that is visually unworkable at sunset may offer a very different opportunity early in the morning.
However, a quiet location does not automatically mean a flight is possible. We check applicable restrictions, permissions and conditions for the specific place before planning drone coverage.
Couple’s Shoots, Elopements and Vow Renewals
These recommendations are particularly useful for couple’s sessions, intimate elopements and vow renewals, where we have flexibility to build the experience around the light and location.
A wedding with guests has a different timeline. The ceremony, programme and time with your loved ones shape the coverage, so we plan that separately with you and your wedding team.
For a flexible session, tell us what matters most: quieter streets, vivid blue and white scenery, the setting sun or a romantic evening atmosphere. We will suggest a time and route that suit your priorities.
