Already Married, with New Promises to Share
Donovan and Beeminet were already married when they came to Santorini. For this morning in Oia, they had written personal vows especially for each other, words they had not shared before. Their sunrise vow exchange ceremony gave them the time and space to say those promises aloud.
There were no guests, no celebrant and no separate wedding planner. We arranged the filming together, choosing a rooftop terrace for their symbolic ceremony and a morning walk through Oia afterwards. I was their videographer and the only person there to witness the exchange.
Why We Chose Sunrise in Oia
Sunrise gave us the opportunity to use a beautiful setting that would have been much harder to enjoy at sunset, when the surrounding area becomes busy. For Donovan and Beeminet, the quieter morning also created the right atmosphere for sharing something so personal.
That calm shaped the whole session. We could walk between locations, pause for portraits and take our time without the constant movement of visitors around us. For an outdoor vow exchange in Oia, choosing the time carefully can make a significant difference to how the experience feels.
Sunrise does not guarantee complete privacy in a public area, but it usually gives us more options for finding a quiet setting. On this morning, we had the space to keep their promises at the centre of the experience.
A Quiet Walk to Their Rooftop Ceremony
We began filming on the way to the terrace we had chosen in advance. These first scenes included walking through Oia, individual portraits and Donovan opening his vows. They became a gentle introduction to the words that followed.
One moment I particularly remember happened just before the ceremony: Donovan carefully helped Beeminet adjust her veil. It was a small gesture of care, and it reflected the thoughtfulness they would soon describe in their promises.
We quickly found an easy rhythm together. They were enjoying the experience, and there was a sense of comfort on both sides of the camera. That connection gave us room to create while keeping the morning relaxed.
Their Vows, Spoken Without Interruption
At the terrace, I helped them find their positions and invited them to read their vows one at a time. Each person spoke from beginning to end without interruption. There was no need to pause their exchange for another angle or repeat a sentence while they were sharing it for the first time.
Their words moved between faith, memories and the future they wanted to build. They remembered their first meeting, flowers sent three weeks later and a proposal at Eagle Beach in Aruba, with the date and time still clearly held in their story.
“In a world full of love stories, ours is my favorite because God himself is the author.”
They spoke about recognising goodness, gentleness and care in each other. Their promises included a life filled with laughter, adventure and peace, and a commitment to support and protect one another emotionally, physically and spiritually.
After both had finished reading and shared a kiss, we filmed a few additional movements from other angles. Keeping those extra shots separate allowed the original exchange to unfold in full.
A Morning Together Among Oia’s Streets
After the ceremony, we continued walking through Oia and stopped at different locations for more filming. With so few people around, we had the freedom to choose our backgrounds and let each scene develop at a comfortable pace.
This session was dedicated to video. Photography was planned separately for another location, so there was no need to divide this morning between still photographs and moving sequences.
For their intimate session, that arrangement worked beautifully. I could guide the movement when needed, then leave space for them to be together. A photographer and videographer who work closely as a team can also create that ease; here, separate sessions suited the experience we had planned.
Planning a Private Vow Exchange in Santorini
Donovan and Beeminet’s morning shows how meaningful a symbolic vow exchange can be when you are already married. You can write promises specifically for the occasion and create a personal moment together, with a film that preserves your voices as well as the setting.
The private rooftop terrace featured in this film is no longer available for shoots. Access to locations in Santorini changes, so we discuss current options when planning each session. Similar settings may be possible with the owner’s permission, and we confirm access before including a private location in your plans.
The location provides the setting, but your words give the film its personal meaning. For Donovan and Beeminet, that meaning was captured in a line that connected the morning around them with the future ahead:
“This sunrise, marking not only the start of this day, but also the beginning of our forever.”
